Hyper Mobility in Dancers and Gymnasts
Many sporting activities work on increasing flexibility beyond normal and functional ranges of motion (ROM). Hyper mobility is very important to dancers and gymnasts, but it can come with a cost! At what cost are you willing to pay, in order to continue these activities? What if the cost could be decreased by increasing core strength and joint stability, would you give it a try?
Pilates is an excellent way to increase core strength as well as strengthen the intrinsic (small muscles) muscles. Strengthening programs often focus on large global muscles, such as hamstrings, quadriceps, biceps & triceps. When the intrinsic muscles are not addressed, proper movement and stability are effected. With a balanced Pilates program, you will notice your overall strength increase, plus you will have better control throughout the ROM your activities require you to perform.
As a dancer or gymnast, do you experience joint popping? Or do you have hyper extension in your elbows and/or knees? If so, these are beginning signs of instability, which can lead to more serious issues if not addressed.
